鹹蛋黃在中文中除了代表食物，都代表著呈橙黃色的夕陽。照中文意思上，鹹蛋黃和中秋好像沒有甚麼關係。
但其實鹹蛋黃常常用作傳統月餅的食材，「雙黃白蓮蓉」中的雙黃就是兩個鹹蛋黃的意思。大家會在中秋節中和家人一邊賞月、一邊食月餅。相信不少家庭都上演過「爭取具有最大鹹蛋黃的月餅」一幕。這種氣氛別具一番風味，是不少家庭的共同回憶。
